WALK ON KEYBOARD

The design and construction of a large scale piano keyboard was commissioned by Victorian Arts Centre in Melbourne as an opening feature for one of the childrens music festivals.
Playing the instrument was accomplished by walking or dancing on the surface of the piano keys, which were painted over a large, rectrangular flexible membrane with a series of pressure sensors. It was designed for a solo or a group dance performance.
The heart of the system consisted of a custom built, reprogrammable MIDI processor, a digital sound module and amplified speakers, all enclosed in a grand piano shaped box.
A similar but much larger musical instrument was designed and built one year earlier in a form of a "Magic Carpet" which covered an entire outdoor stage of the Arts Centre. It was primarly used for a competition in spontaneous music and sound creation by different dancing groups of young people.
"With each of these designs, Peter has made a major contribution to the magical visitor experience that was being sought." Adrian Alexander, The Arts Centre
